The gnu or wildebeest is officially named after the Khoikhoi name for it which is gnou, they are a native people of South Western Africa.
However, if Albert, one of the most knowledgeable guides at Okonjima game reserve in Namibia, is to be believed they are named because of the noise they make.
Albert has the most mellifluous deep voice that you have ever heard. He talks about the animals, large and small, in such endearing ways that you feel they are part of his whole persona.
He also has a great sense of humour as he demonstrates when talking about why the gnu has such a hairy face.
I hope that, like me, you laugh, but also want to meet Albert and experience Okonjima for yourself and get Albert and the other guides to tell you their stories.
